COVID-19 has recently shone a light on human nature, as the world has watched in recent times all of the responses to the pandemic which have swept the world and have posed some unprecedented challenges for individuals, communities and countries to deal with. And yet, despite the almost unfathomable scale of this issue, the stories of human endeavour, kindness, charity and hope have shone through and offered some solace during difficult times. However, we all know that it shouldn’t take a crisis to be considerate of others less fortunate than we may find ourselves. The importance of charity, philanthropy and community outreach are a constant.

Who are Shooting Stars Children’s Hospices?

Shooting Star Children's Hospices is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. They support families across Surrey and London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement, with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

How has COVID-19 impacted Shooting Stars?

This is by far one of the most challenging and unprecedented times that charities have had to face.

At Shooting Star Children’s Hospices their main priority is to do all that they can to maintain services where possible and ensure the safety of the children and families they care for, as well as their staff, volunteers and supporters.

The day after the UK went into lockdown, they launched an emergency appeal to help bridge some of the gap they were facing in loss of income due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Due to the restrictions from the UK Government to minimise social contact and mass gatherings, they had to come to the very difficult decision, along with most other charities, to cancel both of their fundraising events. In addition, following the announcement from the UK Government of a second lockdown, all their shops had to be closed from Thursday 5th November until 2nd December.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an undeniable impact on Shooting Star Children’s Hospices in terms of the care that they can provide at this time and their inability to fundraise.
